“I love you,” he said.
“I love you more,” she said.
“I love you most,” he fired back.
Smiling as he did. Smiling small at first, but the more she smiled back the larger his smile got until it was full and bright with his teeth showing and his eyes lighting up. He waited. He kept looking at her but he waited for what he knew was coming.
“I love you mostest,” she finally said.
Her smile as wide as could be, her eyes lighting up as well, and for a moment he was lost. He always seemed to lose himself in those eyes. The way they sparkled when the light hit them. How the hazel color mixed greens and browns and danced right into his soul. He was lost for a moment…
There’s an old rumor about soulmates. That one way or another they will always come back to each other.
Their story was long, like most good ones are, and that was okay. Their story wasn’t always easy, like most things worth doing, but loving each other was the always the easiest. From the start of their story things were different. Things between them were different. It wasn’t explainable. It wasn’t deniable. It was something special. It was true love. Something only God can do. A love deeper than oceans, thicker than forests, stronger than rivers, and taller than mountains.
Their story was long, full of sweet words and tender touches. Letters and little handmade gifts. There was passion and expression and there was joy in the simplest pleasures between one another. From holding hands to looking in each others eyes. They would endlessly appreciate the smallest of things because their story was long.
Their story was long, it was full of twists and turns as every adventure worth taking is. But from the beginning things were different, and he was in it for the long haul. He knew he was made to love her down to every detail and be a true man like she’d never had. He made it so important to show her his love, to care for her heart in ways she would never know, and to treat her as the princess he knew she was. He wanted to right every wrong other guys ever did to her, to heal her heart & renew her soul, and he knew he would spend the rest of his days making sure she was lifted up day in & day out.
Their story was long, and it took its time to get started, it took His time to get started. But from the beginning things were different, and she was in it for the long haul. She was made to love him and show him that love in the sweetest, tender ways that he’d never had. She made it so important to show him the love, support, and respect he always needed, and to care for his heart like it was her own. She wanted to be right by his side to care for him in the smallest & grandest ways, and she waited for the chance to truly do that, and she knew it was true love and there would be no stopping it in the end.
Their story was long, but it was full and real like a love story should be. It had joys and sorrow, wins and trying times, but they were all taken in stride and they were all faced together. No matter what it would always be them together. Their hearts beat at the same rhythm and their souls were twins. They were a team in every way and it wouldn’t have felt right to face anything without the other by their side.
Their story was long, but it was beautiful with a love like no other. With dancing in the kitchen while they cooked or lazy days in bed together when it rained or singing to music when they did, well, really anything. With adventurous trips at a moments notice and exploring the outdoors, cities, and food hand in hand. Working on their dream home together or building projects with her design eye and his carpentry hands. They created and laughed and built a life flowing with passions. They sailed waters and hiked trails, they drank coffee and talked for hours, they snuggled on the couch and they drove the countryside with her hand in his.
Their story was long, but it was complete. He led with love and she supported with respect. They spoke a language deeper than words. They built a home and filled it with Christ. They shared life and love with their baby girl and taught her to share that love, to value experiences more than things, and to be humble and positive everyday. It was just the way they were and it was wonderful. How they motivated each other in the sweetest ways. With notes and words, actions and positivity. They nurtured not only each others hearts but their dreams too. Working hard towards their goals and their passions, always helping each other be the best version of themself. They tried their hardest to share light wherever they went, showing kindness, and living with love. For each other and those around them.
Their story was long, but it was rich with love. It was sweet and mature, it was founded in faith and trust. It stole kisses and held hands tight. It was honest and true, forgiving and patient. It burned like the hottest coals of a fire that always seem to keep going & going. It was the best of both of them and they knew it always would be. He understood her, her ways and needs, her heart and spirit. He would always care for her so strong. She knew him, his thoughts and wants, his heart and passions. She would never forget him in any way. It was a different kind of love, one that ran so deep it felt like it had always been, and their seemingly chance meeting had just unearthed it.
Their story was long, but it was perfect as they melted into each other so easily. So completely. And so perfectly. Their story was long, they always knew it would be. In fact, it was endless. Just like their love. And it would be okay. It would all be okay.
…He was lost in her always, but he was so, so found. He smiled back. Her beaming delight at besting him with “I love yous” was adorable, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Ya know, 7 billion smiles in the world, and yours will be the only one I ever love.”
Her eyes got the look she had given him so many times now. The one that said “I love you forever” and that was always met with his gaze right back saying “I love you for always.” It was another way they were so connected. Just a look would say everything when words weren’t enough, they’d created some words of their own for this reason, but really, a look would do it, and they both knew.
“You melt me, ya know,” she said. Appreciating every step of the journey that had gotten them to each others arms.
“Melt into me,” he said. Knowing it had all been worth it to pull her close and love her fully.
And with that, she melted. Right into him.
